Trip schedule
Tuesday, 14 June 2022
You will fly to Johannesburg on your own. After arriving at Johannesburg airport, you will go on your own to hotel Southern Sun O.R. Tambo International Airport. This is located next to the airport.
Wednesday, 15 June 2022
Your tour will begin and end at Johannesburg International Airport (also known as OR Tambo). All participants will be transferred from the airport to Entabeni Game Reserve at set transfer times. The set transfer departure times from the airport are: 08:30, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00. If none of these transfers fit your arrival, it is possible to book an individual transfer at an additional cost. Upon arrival in Entabeni, you will meet your tour guide and be checked into your lodge/camp. Participants arriving on one of the first three transfers (departing from Johannesburg International Airport at 08:30, 10:00 & 12:00) will have the opportunity to go on the first of several exciting game drives. The game drives offer the opportunity to experience an authentic African safari in serene surroundings. The Entabeni Game Reserve offers a wide variety of wildlife, open safari vehicles and relatively few tourists, creating an ideal wilderness atmosphere.
Thursday, 16 June 2022
Day two of your stay in Entabeni is dedicated to exploring the game reserve through a game drive and/or a bush walk. We get used to the geography and climate of the park, and we can slowly start preparing ourselves for Saturday's exciting event: The Big Five Marathon. The game drive is included in the itinerary and will take place either in the early morning or late afternoon. A bush walk with an experienced armed ranger is also included on the second day, giving us the chance to get really close to nature and wildlife. Additional game drives and bush walks can be purchased on site. Alternatively, some of your free time can be used for shorter runs outside Entabeni - the tour guide will help organise them. The early morning game drives usually take place between 06:00 and 09:30. During these early hours we will experience the cool morning, spot spectacular wildlife, and most likely work up an appetite. Once back from the morning safari, we will be richly satisfied by the overwhelming breakfast buffet that awaits us at our lodge/camp. The afternoon game drive starts around 16:00, returning to the lodge in time for dinner around 19:30. Like the morning game drive, the afternoon drive offers great wildlife experiences. In addition, the afternoon drive offers the opportunity to witness a beautiful sunset in an ideal setting: enjoying a cold drink on the savannah, while admiring the changing colours of the darkening night sky. The afternoon drive then turns into a night drive, where we get the chance to spot the fascinating nocturnal wildlife with a spotlight. NOTE: June is winter time in South Africa and while daytime temperatures often rise to 20-25 degrees Celsius, temperatures around 0 degrees Celsius at night are not uncommon! Especially the large drop from day to night temperature makes the evenings and mornings feel extremely cold. It is therefore essential to bring a winter jacket, warm hat and gloves when going on a game drive! In recent years, the game in the reserve has become increasingly accustomed to tourists. It is therefore not unusual to see elephants, giraffes and various species of antelope grazing in the vicinity of the safari vehicles. A pride of lions even stops the traffic now and then, as they lazily lie across the path. We use open 4x4 safari vehicles, which give us an excellent opportunity to view the game in complete safety. During our stay, we are assigned a number of park rangers: one for about every ten participants. The rangers ensure our safety, drive the safari vehicles, provide expert guidance, coordinate events with the game warden, and are at our disposal around the clock. In addition, a tour guide will be with the group from start to finish.
Friday, 17 June 2022
After breakfast, you will be given a presentation about the trail, followed by an extensive inspection of the trail. There is again a chance that you will encounter the Big Five! After the inspection there is a lunch with all participants. The rest of the day is for leisure. Dinner is included.
Saturday, 18 June 2022
The big day! Today the Big Five Marathon or Half Marathon is on the programme. After an early breakfast you will be picked up at the accommodation and brought to the start of the Big Five Race. The start is at 09.00 hours. Afterwards there is a transfer back to your accommodation.
Sunday, 19 June 2022
On this day, you can recover from all the efforts. The morning is free and in the afternoon a game drive is scheduled. At the end of the afternoon, a big party is organised, the After Marathon Party. This includes a dinner, a prize-giving ceremony and live entertainment.
Monday, 20 June 2022
The last full day in Entabeni. You can opt for a morning or afternoon safari on the spot and there is also the possibility of taking part in a so-called bush walk (also included). In the evening, you will have your last dinner in your accommodation.
