There are virtually no flat sections on the run – instead, the course constantly fluctuates between mild ups and downs (generally not more than a few meters at a time)

The Icefjord Midnight Marathon. Ice that stretches as far as the eye can see, rocky terrain and impressive icebergs glistening in the nightly sunlight. Yes, you are in Greenland, in the town of Ilullisat. Where a colourful backdrop winds its way through the ancient Inuit ruins of Sermiut to the UNESCO-recognised Ilulissat Icefjord. Illulissat is an extraordinary winter wonderland located about 300 km above the Arctic Circle in Disko Bay on Greenland's west coast. It is the third largest town in Greenland with a population of 5,000. This small number may be surprising, but the fact that there are almost as many sled dogs as people is even more so! You will participate in a wonderful marathon, where you can continuously enjoy the beautiful view.

As your flight from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq on Thursday will be early in the morning (09:00), it is recommended that you fly to Copenhagen today. When doing this we Included a one night stay before your flight to Kangerlussuaq! You also have this option on your return flight. Depending on your flight, you could have time to explore Copenhagen. There is also a possibility to participate in a running tour through the centre (costs € 40 pp).
Thursday, 03 June 2021
All participants will meet today in Terminal 2 of Copenhagen Airport. A 4.5-hour flight will take us to Kangerlussuaq, where we will arrive at 11:25 a.m. local time (GMT -3 hours). We will have a meal on board the flight. Here we will transfer to a domestic flight to Ilulissat. Due to the smaller size of the domestic airlines and the limited availability of seats, the group will be divided into two flights. All flights will have landed by late afternoon. After arrival in Ilulissat we will check into our hotels. After we have checked in, you are invited to join us for a tour in Ilulissat. We will walk through the city with a local guide who will explain the history and highlight places of cultural significance. The tour will start at the historic Hotel Hvide Falk, and will make its way past the Zion Church, the local fish market and the colourful houses on our way to the harbour. Along the way you will enjoy interesting stories on various topics, such as the origins of Ilulissat, how the town has developed over the years and the importance of fishing culture. The walk is an excellent opportunity to get a first glimpse of the fascinating culture in Ilulissat, and your guide will be happy to answer your questions. In the evening, all participants gather to enjoy a Greenland buffet. If you still have some energy left at the end of the day, you can participate in an evening kayaking trip among hundreds of icebergs. Meals: Flight meal and dinner are included

This morning, after breakfast at your hotel, you can shake off the travel stiffness with a gentle hike through one of the most acclaimed areas of the region. We hike to the Sermiut Valley, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptionally beautiful nature and unique importance to glacier science. The hike is a must-do activity in the region and takes us about 2 kilometres south of Ilulissat, starting at the old heliport. From there, we enter the UNESCO site via a wooden path to the famous ruins of Sermiut. Sermiut is an ancient settlement that has been home to many different Inuit people for over 4,000 years. The stone ruins of old peat houses are spread over several hilltops that we can see during our walk. We will pass through the old settlement to Nakkaavik, a cliff whose name means 'the place to fall'. You can ask your guide about the origin of this ghostly name. From here we will be treated to a breathtaking view of the Kangia, the famous Ilulissat Icefjord with its many massive icebergs. While you explore the enchanting surroundings, your guide will prepare hot coffee and tea to keep you warm in the polar wind. We follow the same wooden path back to town. In the afternoon and evening you will have the opportunity to experience the Icefjord by boat. We board a boat trip with experienced guides who give us information as we make our way through the icy giants. No matter what the weather is, the icebergs make an impressive sight - they glisten and shine with the sun, while the clouds accentuate the extraordinary blue colours hidden in the ice. The experience is much more exciting in small boats, so we use two 12-passenger boats. This means that there are four departures for this trip: two before dinner and two after dinner. In the evening, all participants will gather to enjoy a pasta dinner and receive the race briefing. Please note that the race briefing is your last chance to change distances. You can also ask questions to the race officials. Tonight you will also have the opportunity to participate in an evening kayak excursion. Meals: Breakfast and dinner are included

The marathon starts at 21:00 and the half marathon starts at 22:30 - all races are held until 4:00 at the latest. Meals: Breakfast is included.

Today is a well-deserved day of relaxation and recovery. Most of us will probably sleep all morning. You can also use the day to explore on your own, or join one of the optional excursions. On this day, we will conduct a special hike & sail excursion to Oqaatsut, a small, authentic village 20 kilometres north of Ilulissat. We also offer a day trip to the immense Eqi Glacier. In the evening, all participants will gather for the celebration dinner. Together we will enjoy the previous night's victory, share stories and enjoy the race video. Meals: Breakfast and dinner are included

Unfortunately, it is time to say goodbye to Ilulissat. We will first fly to Kangerlussuaq in the morning. Once in Kangerlussuaq, we will board a flight back to Copenhagen that will arrive around 21:30. A meal will be served on board the flight. You will proceed to hotel Cabinn Metro on your own. Meals: Breakfast and airplane meal are included
