The race

Running through the active volcanic area, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, the Iceland Volcano Marathon is a unique event! Runners go directly through the Northern Volcanic Zone in the north of Iceland during the very first edition of this marathon. The surroundings include geysers, black volcanic sand, glaciers and small volcanic craters. This geothermal area is still active to this day and offers the prospect of an experience never to be forgotten. The roads are not asphalted, so this can rightly be called an adventurous marathon. Is the marathon distance a little too long? Then you can also choose the half marathon!

Weather

The Icelandic summers are relatively cold and wet. You can expect temperatures between 5 and 15 degrees.

Course

The first 10 km are flat but after that there is a climb of 125 meters. The rest of the course is hilly.

The start of the running trip! You fly to Keflavík on your own. Once you have arrived in Iceland you will fly on your own to Fosshotel Reykjavik, where the first night of the running trip will take place. The rest of the day you will have the opportunity to get to know this interesting city a little better. With almost 24 hours of daylight in the summer, Reykjavik is often described as a city that does not sleep in the summer! In the evening you can enjoy the culinary side of the Icelandic capital. Meals are not included today.

Arrival in Mývatn. After an early breakfast at the hotel, the bus leaves along the beautiful west coast of Iceland. During the ride a guide will tell you about Iceland and its impressive nature. In the afternoon we arrive in Akureyri, better known as the 'capital of the north'. This city is only 100km from the Arctic Circle! This is where a race briefing will take place, during which you will also be provided with a race package and a meal. After the briefing the bus will continue to Mývatn, where the Fosshotel Mývatn is located. Here you can choose for a standard room, or an upgrade to a room overlooking the beautiful lake of Mývatn. Breakfast, lunch box and snack during race briefing are included today.

Optional excursion and leisure time. Today you have the full day to acclimatise to the Icelandic climate in preparation for the big day tomorrow. In addition, you may consider taking part in one of the optional excursions. A discovery of the surroundings of Mývatn or a whale safari near Húsavík are options on request! You can also choose to spend the day as you wish. A hike or bike ride through the beautiful region are examples to make your free time enjoyable. In the evening a pasta dinner will be served at the hotel. Have a good rest tonight, because tomorrow the challenging Iceland Volcano Marathon or Half Marathon is on the schedule!

The big day! The premiere of the Iceland Volcano (Half) Marathon! You will be taken by bus to the start of the marathon and half marathon. Runners will be on the unpaved paths and roads around the majestic Hverfjall crater during this challenging and unique marathon. The dramatic background, the active volcanic area of Northern Iceland, where all this takes place is absolutely enchanting! After the finish, the runners of the whole and half marathon will be served a well-deserved BBQ lunch. You will be brought back to your hotel by shuttle. There you can relax after today's performance! Breakfast and BBQ lunch are included today.

Rest and celebration dinner Today you have the option to go on an excursion or fill in the day as you wish. In the afternoon we leave for the small village of Laugar to celebrate yesterday's performance with a festive dinner. Breakfast and celebration dinner are included. Lunch is only included in the optional excursions.

Back to Keflavik After an early breakfast buses leave for Keflavik International Airport in Reykjavik. Arrival is expected at 14:30. Today you will stay one last time in Iceland, at the BB Hotel Keflavik Airport Hotel you can recover from the long transfer. You can fill in the evening as you wish. There are several dining possibilities near the hotel where you can end your trip with a delicious meal! On request you can also extend your trip with a stay in Reykjavik. Breakfast and lunch box are included today.

The end of your running trip! You go on your own to the airport for the return journey. It's time to say goodbye to Iceland and prepare for your departure back home.
