The race

For runners who prefer to combine this exotic challenge with a shorter distance, the Big Five half marathon is an excellent alternative to the marathon. Like the Marathon, the Half Marathon is run by the Entabeni Safari Conservancy. Apart from the challenging dirt track, the participants also venture encounters with the wild animals of Africa. A unique event, very exclusive and an experience you will never forget!

Course

The course runs on both sand and asphalt roads (80% sand). The course is tough and hilly. Halfway through, the course includes a steep descent and a steep ascent. Along the way, you can spot many wild animals such as lions, elephants, etc.

You will fly to Johannesburg today and transfer to your airport hotel on your own.

Wednesday, 14 June 2023

Your tour will start and end at Johannesburg International Airport (also known as OR Tambo). All participants will be transferred from the airport to Entabeni Game Reserve at set transfer times. The set transfer departure times from the airport are: 08:30, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00. If none of these transfers suit your arrival, it is possible to book an individual transfer at an additional cost. On arrival in Entabeni, you will meet your tour guide and be checked into your lodge/camp. Participants arriving on one of the first three transfers (departing Johannesburg International Airport at 08:30, 10:00 & 12:00) will have the opportunity to go on the first of several exciting game drives. The game drives offer the opportunity to experience an authentic African safari in a serene environment. The Entabeni Game Reserve offers a wide variety of wildlife, open safari vehicles and relatively few tourists, creating an ideal wilderness atmosphere.

In recent years, wildlife in the reserve has become increasingly accustomed to tourists. Consequently, it is not uncommon to see elephants, giraffes and various species of antelope grazing near the safari vehicles. A pride of lions even occasionally hold up traffic as they lie lazily across the path. We use open 4x4 safari vehicles, which give us an excellent opportunity to view the wildlife in complete safety. During our stay, we are assigned a number of park rangers: one for about every 10 participants. The rangers will ensure our safety, drive the safari vehicles, provide expert guidance, coordinate events with the game warden, and be at our disposal around the clock. In addition, a tour guide will be with the group from start to finish.

After breakfast, you will have a presentation on the trail, followed by an extensive inspection of the trail. Once again, there is a chance you may encounter the Big Five! After the inspection, there will be a lunch with all participants. During this lunch there will also be explanations about the event, The rest of the day is at leisure. Dinner is included.

The big day! Today, the Big Five Marathon or Half Marathon is on the programme. After an early breakfast, you will be collected from the accommodation and taken to the start of the Big Five Race. The start is at 09:00. Afterwards, transfer back to your accommodation.

Sunday, 18 June 2023

You can recover from all your efforts on this day. The morning is free and a game drive is scheduled in the afternoon. At the end of the afternoon, a big party will be organised, the After Marathon Party. This will include a dinner, awards ceremony and live entertainment.

Monday, 19 June 2023

The last full day in Entabeni. You can choose a morning or afternoon safari on site, and there is also the option of taking part in a so-called bush walk (also included). In the evening follows the last dinner at your accommodation.
