The Icefjord Midnight Half Marathon. Ice stretching as far as the eye can see, rocky terrain and impressive icebergs glistening in the night sunlight. Yes, you are in Greenland, in the town of Iullisat. Where a colourful backdrop winds its way through the ancient Inuit ruins of Sermermiut to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord. Ilulissat is an extraordinary winter wonderland located approximately 300 km above the Arctic Circle in Disko Bay on the west coast of Greenland. It is the third largest town in Greenland with a population of 5,000. This small number may be surprising, but the fact that there are almost as many sled dogs as people is even more so! Here you will participate in a beautiful Half Marathon where you can enjoy the magnificent views throughout.

  • Trip schedule

On this day you fly with KLM from Amsterdam to Copenhagen. Your flight leaves at 12:35 and arrives in Copenhagen at 13:55. Then you go to hotel Cabinn on your own. It is possible to join a running tour through the city from 15:30 (pace 5-6 minutes per km)

All participants will meet at Terminal 2 of Copenhagen Airport. The flight to Greenland departs in the afternoon. Air Greenland does not cooperate with other airlines, which means that you will have to collect your luggage at Copenhagen Airport, check in and check in again for the flight to Greenland. Check-in closes one hour before departure and if you are not arriving in Copenhagen on a morning flight on Thursday 29 May, we strongly recommend that you arrive in Copenhagen one or more days in advance. A 4.5 hour flight takes us to Kangerlussuaq, where we arrive in the evening at 18:20 local time (GMT -3 hours). We will be served a meal on board the flight. In Kankerlussuaq we will transfer to a domestic flight to Ilulissat. Due to the smaller size of the domestic airlines and limited availability of seats, the group will be divided over several flights. Our flights will arrive in Ilulissat late in the evening and here we will check in to our hotels. After settling in, we invite you for a late-night tour of Ilulissat. We will walk through the town with one of our tour guides who will explain the history and highlight places of cultural significance. The tour starts at the historic Hotel Hvide Falk and passes Zion Church, the local fish market and the colourful houses on the way to the harbour. Along the way, you can enjoy interesting stories about various topics, such as the origins of Ilulissat, how the town has developed over the years and the importance of the fishing culture. The walk is an excellent opportunity to get a first-hand look at Ilulissat’s fascinating culture and your guide will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

This morning, after breakfast at your hotel, shake off the travel bug with an easy hike through one of the region’s most prized areas. We hike to the Sermermiut Valley, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptional natural beauty and unique importance to glacial science. The hike is a must-do activity in the region and takes us approximately 2 kilometers south of Ilulissat, starting at the old heliport. From there, we enter the UNESCO area via a wooden path to the famous Sermermiut Ruins. Sermermiut is an ancient settlement that has been home to many different Inuit people for over 4,000 years. The stone ruins of old turf houses are scattered across several hilltops that we can see during our hike. We continue through the old settlement to Nakkaavik, a cliff whose name means “the place to fall.” You can ask your guide about the origin of this ghost name. From here we are treated to breathtaking views of Kangia, the famous Ilulissat Icefjord with its many massive icebergs. While you explore the enchanting surroundings, your guide will prepare hot coffee and tea to keep you warm in the arctic wind. We follow the same wooden path back to the city. In the afternoon and evening you have the chance to experience the Icefjord by boat. We will board a boat tour with experienced guides who will provide us with information as we make our way through the icy giants. No matter the weather, the icebergs make an impressive sight - they glitter and shine with the sun, while the clouds accentuate the extraordinary blue colours hidden in the ice. The experience is much more exciting in small boats, so we use two 12-person boats. This means that there are four departure times for this trip: two before dinner and two after dinner. In the evening all participants will come together to enjoy a pasta dinner and receive the race briefing. Please note that the race briefing is your last chance to change the distances. You can also ask questions to the race officials. Tonight you also have the opportunity to join an evening kayak excursion. Meals: Breakfast and dinner are included.

It's almost time! You have the morning and afternoon to sleep, explore and prepare for the night ahead. For those who want to get a taste of local culture, a limited number of guests can join a "Kaffemik" excursion at the home of a local Greenlandic couple. The marathon starts at 21:00 and the half marathon starts at 22:30 - all races are held until 4:00 at the latest. Meals: Breakfast is included.

Today is a well-deserved relaxation and recovery day. Most of us will probably sleep the whole morning. You can also use the day to explore on your own, or join one of the optional excursions. On this day we will do a special hike & sail excursion to Oqaatsut, a small, authentic village 20 kilometers north of Ilulissat. Furthermore, we also offer a day trip to the immense Eqi glacier. In the evening, all participants will gather for the celebratory dinner. Together we will enjoy the victory of the previous night, share stories and enjoy the race video. Meals: Breakfast and dinner are included.

We have one last day to enjoy the charm of Ilulissat and its surroundings. Again, you can choose to explore on your own, or if you haven't been kayaking yet, we highly recommend it! Today there is one last optional excursion to hike and sail to the Oqaatsut settlement, in case you couldn't make it the day before.

Sadly it is time to say goodbye to Ilulissat. We will first fly to Kangerlussuaq in the morning. Once in Kangerlussuaq we will board a flight back to Copenhagen arriving around 21:30. A meal will be served on board the flight. You will make your own way to hotel Cabinn. Meals: Breakfast and flight meal are included.

At the end of the morning you will make your own way to the airport for your return flight to the Netherlands. Your return flight with KLM is scheduled for 20:55. Arrival in Amsterdam is approximately 22:25.
