Part of the route takes place on the ice cap itself, but most of the trail is run on the gravel road (often snow-covered) that connects the ice cap to the small town of Kangerlussuaq, just north of the Arctic Circle.

The Polar Circle Marathon - often referred to as "the coolest marathon on earth". Ice as far as the eye can see. Incredibly fresh air. Musk oxen and arctic foxes on the stark landscape of the arctic tundra. Yes, we are in one of the most remote corners of the world: Greenland, in the town of Kangerlussuaq. The endless ice and arctic tundra of this vast country form the backdrop for this unusual race, in which runners race through the silent arctic desert past glacier tongues and moraine landscapes. This is a rare opportunity to visit one of the most remote corners of the world and at the same time dare to take part in an extremely challenging running event.

Trip schedule
Wednesday, 22 October 2025
You have time to explore Copenhagen. There is also a possibility to participate in the 8.6 km run through the city center (costs €55 pp). In the evening there is a tapas dinner in the office of Albatros Travel.
Thursday, 23 October 2025
All participants will meet at Terminal 2 of Copenhagen Airport. The flight to Greenland leaves early (10:00) in the morning. A 4.5 hour flight takes us to Kangerlussuaq where we arrive in the morning, local time (GMT -3 hours). About 500 people form the permanent population of this township, which was established by the US Army during World War II and handed over to the Greenland government in 1992. Upon arrival we check in at the Kangerlussuaq hotel. You can go on an optional walking tour or just explore the area on your own. The guided hike to Mount Hassel is a 2-3 hour hike that follows the mountain ridge eastwards towards the inland ice. The higher we go, the more beautiful it becomes and if the weather permits, we have a fantastic panoramic view from the fjord to the inland ice. If there is too much snow/ice, the guides will try to find an alternative route at a lower level. In the evening, dinner is included at Restaurant Roklubben, a meal on board the flight and lunch at your accommodation are included.
Friday, 24 October 2025
Today all participants will set off for the morning route inspection to get a feel for the challenge of running on ice. Non-runners will also take part in the race and can use the day as a sightseeing trip to the Greenland Ice Cap. Later all runners will gather at Hotel Kangerlussuaq for the race briefing, where the race officials and medical team will provide the latest information on the marathon and half marathon races. If you would like to change the distance* or register for the Polar Bear Challenge this is also the time to do so. It is not possible to register for the Polar Bear Challenge late after the marathon race on Saturday. *Both full and half marathons are limited to 150 runners each, so changes to distance and registration for the Polar Bear Challenge are subject to availability and on a first come, first serve basis. After the race briefing a pasta dinner will be served at Hotel Kangerlussuaq. Breakfast and sandwich lunch are also included today.
Saturday, 25 October 2025
At 7:00 in the morning, the marathon runners will drive to the starting point at the ice cap in all-terrain vehicles. The marathon starts at 8:30 and has a time limit of 7 hours. The finish line of the marathon is in front of Polar Lodge. The runners will be offered water and refreshments at the stations posted along the route. A BBQ lunch will be served at the finish area for all participants (including speculators) between 12:00 and 15:30. In the evening, a semi-pasta dinner will be served at Hotel Kangerlussuaq. Breakfast is also included today.
Sunday, 26 October 2025
Full marathon runners and non-runners can spend the day on an optional excursion or explore the area on their own. It is not possible to go to the course and finish and cheer, as the all-terrain vehicles are in full use for the half marathon. In the evening, we celebrate the conclusion of the Polar Circle Marathon & Half Marathon with a festive Greenlandic dinner at Roklubben. The awards ceremony for the top three finishers in each category will also take place before the party begins under a (hopefully) Northern Lights-lit night sky. Breakfast is also included today.
